A group of parishioners have come together to adopt a cottage of boys at the Mountain School next door. They provide opportunities for the boys to receive tutoring, arts programs, sports programs, celebrations of birthdays, etc.

There is need for additonal volunteers for many of the areas in which we are currently serving the youth at the Catalina Mountain School. As volunteers to the program we can be strong advocates to bring others into the various programs. I ask that you seek out others that may have an interest in working with the youth at the school. Outlined below are some of the opportunities that currently exist at Catalina Mountain School:

  1. Mentoring - visit youth that receive no regular visits but would like to have one. Involves one on one talks for about an hour per week. You are a role model, confidant and friend that can have a positive influence on the behavior and future for the young man.
  2. Tutor - work with the youth on school subjects (math, English/writing, science, social studies) that he may need extra assistance with.
  3. IBM mentor - work with the youth on developing computer skills under the direction of IBM personnel (Wednesday afternoon).
  4. Religious education - teach a group of youth interested in learning about the Christian/Catholic faith to eventually lead to 1st Communion. Sessions are Saturday afternoons and would be one or two Saturdays per month.
  5. Art Programs - working with small groups of youth interested in art/craft work on Wednesday afternoons.
  6. Birthday Parties - wednesday afternoons; bringing ice cream and cake into the cottage and visiting with the boys during the refreshment time.
  7. Christmas Party- Held in mid-December. Help distribute food, gifts, play games and visit with the approximately 50-70 youth attending for about 2 hours.

Thank you for all of your help in the past and in the future as we look to build on our service at Catalina Mountain School.
