Suggested Prayers

Lord God, no one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care. In your kindness, watch over refugees and victims of war, those separated from their loved ones, young people who are lost, and those who have left home or who have run away from home.  Bring them back safely to the place where they long to be and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and to all in need Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Almighty and merciful God, whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own; look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry. Bless those who work to bring them relief; inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts; and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your Kingdom of justice and of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Gracious Lord,

There are many in Your world today who have been forced from their homes by persecution and violence.

Keep them in your constant care, and bring them to a place of safety.

Be the Good Shepherd to refugees who are in flight. Guide them to the green pastures of safety.

Be the Everlasting Father to refugees who have lost home and loved ones. Lead, protect and provide for them.

Be the Great Physician to refugees who are suffering. Grant them healing and hope.

Be the Hiding Place to refugees who are languishing in camps. Shelter their souls as well as their bodies.

Be the Deliverer to refugees who have been able to return home. Restore their lives so that those who have sown in tears may reap in joy.

Be the Wonderful Counselor to refugees who have been resettled. Help them find their way in a new land.

Be the Giver of all good gifts to those who serve refugees. Empower them to do justice and love mercy and walk humbly with You.

Be the Lord of lords to all the earth, that those who rule would do so in justice and righteousness, and no one would have to become a refugee anymore.

We ask these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus. Amen.

Compassionate God, make your loving presence felt to refugees, torn from home, family and everything familiar. Warm, especially, the hearts of the young, the old, and the most vulnerable among them. Help them know that you accompany them as you accompanied Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in their exile to Egypt. Lead refugees to a new home and a new hope, as you led the Holy Family to their new home in Nazareth. Open our hearts to receive them as our sisters and brothers in whose face we see your son, Jesus. Amen

Father of the poor, God of love, you made us all your children; we praise You and thank You. Full us with a sense of justice. Help us in your work, to take the side of the lowly, to defend the newcomer, to welcome the stranger. Help us now to befriend the friendless, protect the weak children, and work for the rights of all. Lord, on our journey home, bring us together in peace, in justice, and in love, through Christ our Lord. Amen

Prayer for Children Immigrating Alone

Mary, you traveled alone

To reach the loving embrace

Of your beloved family member.

Elizabeth welcomed you with

Open arms and an open heart.

Be with those children

Who are traveling across borders

To seek solace with family.

Protect them from exploitation

And from traumatizing experiences.

Teach us by

The example of the Visitation.

Grant us open arms

And open hearts

To receive your children

Trying to find the way

To a new, life-giving home.

Guide our Church’s efforts

To advocate for reform

Of the U.S. immigration process

So all families can be reunited

In safety and security,

Without fear or terror.

Mary, Mother of the human family,

Help us end the misery

Of children separated from family

By man-made borders–

But not by love.

May they arrive, as you did,

To joy and to the benediction

Of a loving embrace.

Prayer for Those That Migrate

Mary knew the weariness Of the journey; To Bethlehem, To Egypt, Back to Nazareth. She knew the weariness, The fear, the longing for home, The need to continue moving, moving, The longing for journey’s end, the longing for at least a semblance of a home. To Mary we entrust The mothers, the fathers, the children who today are holy families Migrating in hope, in fear, in longing, for peace, for some security, For something like a home. May they find their journey’s end as we open ourselves to their stories, their need, their spirits; We ask for mercy for all migrants and for our communities who are challenged to welcome them, to give them hope for a new life.

Prayer of an Immigrant

O holy God, Heart of heaven and earth, praised be your holy name. Your daughters and sons, from all peoples of the world, regardless of borders, praise you.

We praise you and give you thanks because you have placed in our hands the immigrant pilgrims who make the Earth flourish and produce, to bring food to the table of the rich and the poor alike.

We praise you and give you thanks because you walk always with those who cross borders, in search of well-being, doing their part in building the world you entrusted to us. On our way, we are mindful of your Presence in the promise to Abraham and Sarah and in the liberation of your people, Israel.

We praise you and give you thanks for your blessings on all immigrants, on those who cross all the borders in the United States.

And you, O Lord of justice, love and compassion, be always our protector and intercessor for reconciliation and the building of equality and peace. Amen.
